Your pharmacist is your most accessible healthcare provider. Here are five important conversations to have before filling your next prescription.
Your pharmacist is one of the most accessible healthcare professionals you have — and yet many people pick up their prescriptions without asking a single question. Here are five conversations worth having before you start a new medication.
1. What does this medication do, and how long until it works? Understanding the purpose and timeline helps you set realistic expectations and stick with your treatment plan.
2. Are there side effects I should watch for? Every medication carries potential side effects. Knowing what's common versus what warrants a call to your doctor gives you peace of mind.
3. Can this interact with my other medications or supplements? Drug interactions are more common than you might think. Always share your full medication list — including over-the-counter products and vitamins.
4. Should I take this with food or at a specific time of day? Timing and food can significantly affect how well a medication works. A simple question can make a big difference in effectiveness.
5. Is there a generic alternative available? If cost is a concern, ask about generics. As we've discussed in our other articles, generics are equally effective and often significantly cheaper.
At Border Pharmacy, our pharmacists welcome these conversations — whether in person at our Vancouver location or over the phone for online customers.
